Friends: A look into Courtney Cox’s heartbreaking miscarriages

People don’t give the 90s hit show Friends nearly enough credit for how it showed pregnancy and parenthood in a modern way. One story established realistically was that Chandler and Monica couldn’t have children.

After two seasons of trying, they discovered Chandler’s sperm didn’t move well, and Monica’s womb wasn’t suitable for babies. In the end, they chose to have a child through a surrogate.

Unfortunately for Courteney Cox, who played Monica on Friends, the fact that she couldn’t have a child hit a little too close to home. Off-screen, the actress had a hard time with miscarriages that broke her heart.

Courteney Cox had trouble getting pregnant while she was on Friends.

In 1999, Courteney Cox got married to David Arquette. They had trouble having a child for a long time. Cox had seven miscarriages because of a genetic change that caused her body’s antibodies to attack the growing fetus. She was later told that she had an MTHFR gene mutation that makes her more likely to get blood clots that cause miscarriages.

In 2004, in an interview with NBC, the actor who played Ross on Friends said:

“I remember when I had a miscarriage and Jennifer Aniston’s character, Rachel, was giving birth. It was around that time. God, it was awful to have to be funny.”

Courteney was having trouble behind the scenes at the height of her popularity. She went to work every day and made people laugh while ignoring her pain and heartbreak.

After two rounds of IVF, the actor was finally able to have her daughter Coco, who is now 17 years old. She had Coco in 2004, the same year that Friends ended.

When asked why she chose to talk openly about her past, the former Friends member said: ” “I’ve had a lot of miscarriages, and I don’t think people shouldn’t talk about that because it’s sad, but it happens. I think it’s important to let people know about things, so they know they’re not alone.”

Fans can see the strong and cute bond between the mother and daughter on Courteney’s Instagram page. Jennifer Aniston, who has played Cox’s best friend on and off-screen, is their godmother of Coco.
