There are several fan theories about the hit sitcom Friends, including one that claims Rachel dreamed the entire show and another that claims Phoebe was hallucinating the whole time. Even though the sitcom ended in 2004, one burning question remains unanswered: how did the gang always manage to sit on the orange couch at Central Perk?
Because the coffee shop is in New York City, one of the world’s most densely populated cities, Monica, Ross, Joey, Phoebe, Rachel, and Chandler are unlikely to be able to get a seat every time they stop in for their (many) cups of coffee. However, according to Insider, James Michael Tyler, who played Gunther on Friends, told Rarities that one fan theory “makes a lot of sense.”
Gunther, according to the theory, was the reason the crew could always get the couch. The coffee table in front of the orange sofa in some scenes even has a “reserved” sign on it. Why would he book the table on purpose? It’s all because of his huge crush on Rachel, according to the theory.
Tyler claims he never put the sign on the coffee table himself, but he did tell Rarities that he did. “I’m guessing it was one of the set designers or writers… That’s something I’m not sure about. That, however, I recall seeing.” “It never occurred to me why it was there,” he continued, “but in retrospect, it makes a lot of sense [that Gunther placed it there].”
Now that you know the answer to that question, click here to learn why some fans believe the crew’s constant coffee consumption is just a long-term Starbucks marketing ploy.
