When the 2022 Emmy nominations came out on Tuesday, Jennifer Aniston had a mixed bag. She got a nomination, but not for what she might have thought. She didn’t get a nomination for her role as Alex Levy in Season 2 of The Morning Show on Apple TV+. Still, she did get a nomination for Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded) for the Friends HBO Max reunion special. On Monday, September 12, NBC will air the 74th Emmy Awards.
Aniston’s exclusion is surprising because the first season of The Morning Show did well at the 2020 Primetime Emmys. The second season of the show got only three nominations. Billy Crudup won the award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. Reese Witherspoon is the show’s representative in the Outstanding Lead Actress category.
Aniston and her Friend’s co-star Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matthew Perry, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer are up for the award.
Jennifer Aniston was nominated for five Emmys for her role as Rachel Green on Friends; she only won one. In 2009, she made a cameo on 30 Rock, which got her a nomination. Along with Witherspoon, Aniston is an executive producer on the show.
The first episode of The Morning Show aired in November 2019, and the second season won’t start until the fall of 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic. Aniston plays Alex Levy, the anchor of the show’s namesake morning show. When Bradley Jackson, played by Witherspoon, is hired as the new co-anchor, Levy tries to keep her job. In season 2, which dealt with the real-life pandemic, Alex returned to the show. Brian Stelter’s book Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV gave Jay Carson the idea for the show. The show will be back for the 3rd season.
