The Cobra Kai Star, You Likely Forgot, Was a Guest Star on The Big Bang Theory

It would be way too little to say that Netflix’s hit show “Cobra Kai” is an incredible success story in modern television. Even Ralph Macchio and William Zabka, who play the main characters in the series, might be the first to admit that even a few years ago, nobody was eager to see them again or continue the character arcs they started in 1984’s “The Karate Kid.” That’s mainly because the next three movies in “The Karate Kid” franchise were less successful in almost every way (via The Guardian).

Back in 2018, “Cobra Kai” was still given the go-ahead. Even more surprising was that the show’s first season proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that the San Fernando Valley karate scene still had a lot of exciting stories to tell. “Cobra Kai” isn’t just about crane kicks and old tales. The cast and creative team bring high-stakes action and welcome emotional depth to a franchise that, except for the first movie, had become one-dimensional.

Fans of the franchise already knew the faces of original stars Macchio, Zabka, and a few “Cobra Kai” regulars. However, the series has also done well by adding a lot of new faces to “The Karate Kid” story. One of those stars had a significant supporting role on “The Big Bang Theory” years before they became famous for “Cobra Kai.”

Courtney Henggeler played the other Cooper twin.

In the movie “Cobra Kai,” Courtney Henggeler plays Amanda LaRusso, Ralph Macchio’s loving and wonderfully opinionated wife. More than that, she is the voice of reason in a show where most characters don’t act based on logic. Amanda’s presence in “Cobra Kai” has become as crucial to the show’s overall effect as that of many of the show’s main characters.

Henggeler’s character on “The Big Bang Theory,” Missy Cooper, wasn’t quite the same, but that doesn’t mean she wasn’t an interesting one. Sheldon Cooper’s (Jim Parsons) twin sister, Missy, was almost the exact opposite of him in nearly every way. Not only was she a little younger than her brother, but she was also the polar opposite of him in almost every way. During Henggeler’s Season 1 appearance on “The Big Bang Theory,” her character, Missy, was pursued shamelessly by her brother’s best friends Leonard (Johnny Galecki), Howard (Simon Helberg), and Raj (Kunal Nayyar) (Kunal Nayyar).

Missy didn’t come back to “The Big Bang Theory” in person until the 11th season. She came back just in time for Sheldon and Amy Fowler’s wedding, which had a lot of guest stars (Mayim Bialik). She did it while pregnant and separated from her husband, which made it a good topic for some old jokes in the style of “The Big Bang Theory.” And when Henggeler came back to the series, her Missy was just as charming as before.
