According to Warwick Davis, his wife had sepsis and was in such bad shape that he told their kids to “say goodbye” to her.
Sam, 51, who he refers to as his “soulmate,” lives with the Harry Potter star, 52, and his two children, Harrison, 25, and Annabelle, 19.
Doctors got concerned about a scar on the mother-of-back two’s from spinal surgery after she was brought to the hospital, complaining that she felt drowsy since it was “inflamed with fluid, red, and hot to touch.”
Sam could die if she didn’t have surgery right away, the family was told after samples of the fluid revealed deadly A Streptococcus bacteria and a meningitis infection.
Warwick described the terrifying event: “Our family gathered at her bedside; although hopeful, we were saying farewell in case Sam didn’t survive, “says The Sun.
Fortunately, Sam recovered after her surgery and stayed in intensive care, but the actor acknowledged that if it weren’t for her treatment, she might have lost fingers, toes, or limbs.
After being released from the hospital, Sam was taken care of by her husband. For three months, he “played doctor,” giving Sam cardiac medications via drip and syringe.
Warwick further disclosed that as they struggle to come to terms with what happened, he and Sam both continue to experience symptoms of PTSD.
It can be fatal and result in amputations when sepsis drives the immune system to overdrive and assault tissues and organs.
In May, Warwick, speaking on behalf of the UK Sepsis Trust, released a dynamic video to raise awareness of the potentially fatal condition.
About the campaign, he said: “I have a special place in my heart for the UK Sepsis Trust, and thanks to my acting career, I have learned more about the disease.
It’s incredible how many individuals sepsis affects daily, and I’m honored to help spread the word so that as many people as possible know there is a place to turn for support and direction.
