Why Season 2 of How I Met Your Father should Not Have A lot Of Cameos!

How I Met, Your Mother has an extensive fan base, so it’s logical for the creators of How I Met Your Father to emphasise the similarities between the two shows. However, How I Met Your Father managed to postpone a cameo by a prominent primary cast member of the previous series until the show’s season 1 finale, but season 2 should not have too many cameos.

While the How I Met Your Father reboot cameos mainly worked in season 1, Robin cannot appear in season 2 of the spinoff since it would make the appearance of the rest of How I Met Your Mother’s heroes even more unlikely. Not only would bumping into Robin again feel inauthentic for Sophie (or her pals), but the How I Met Your Father cast has yet to meet other characters like Ted, Barney, Lily, and Marshall. Setting up the return of one of these characters would be a more effective way of capitalising on the connection between the two episodes because How I Met Your Father fans already know what Robin was up to in the years between the two shows.

Now that the decision has been made that How I Met Your Father can and will bring back characters from the original series, the second season of the spinoff will need to find a way to avoid becoming an unauthorised revival of the first series, How I Met Your Mother. This was already accomplished by How I Met Your Father’s cameo from Kyle McLachlan’s The Captain by limiting the character’s appearance to a cold open scene; nevertheless, visits from How I Met Your Mother’s primary characters require more than this. When a significant cast member from How I Met Your Mother makes a return appearance on How I Met Your Father, it should be a momentous occasion on the show. However, the fact that the spinoff has brought back Robin not once but twice in its first two seasons may give the impression that there is a revolving door between the two series. This strategy would make cast cameos from How I Met Your Mother less effective and more predictable while at the same time drawing attention away from the new characters and the stories they are developing on How I Met Your Father.
