After an actor has played the same character in a sitcom for a few years. It can be hard to picture them in any other role. For similar reasons, it can be hard to show a different actor playing a beloved sitcom character that people have grown to love over time.
Even though some TV castings seem like they were always set in stone, many legendary characters were almost played by other actors. Matthew Broderick almost played Walter White on Breaking Bad, Connie Britton could have been Olivia Pope on Scandal. The producers of Friends wanted Courtney Cox to play Rachel.
Interestingly, if a few things had gone differently, Jim Parsons would have been too busy to play Sheldon Cooper on The Big Bang Theory. Parsons came surprisingly close to being cast as Barney Stinson in How I Met Your Mother.
The Best Guy for Women
How I Met, Your Mother was on TV from 2005 to 2014, which was a very long time. During its first few years, HIMYM was praised by critics because it brought a new sense of humor to the tired sitcom formula. Many of the show’s early episodes were based on simple ideas, like the gang throwing too many interventions at each other. But they were handled in hilarious ways.
Before Neil Patrick Harris was cast as Barney Stinson on How I Met Your Mother, it seemed like he might never be able to get away from his role as Doogie Howser on TV. But once fans and critics saw Harris play Barney for the first time. His other TV roles became less critical because of how well he played Barney Stinson on HIMYM. Neil Patrick Harris’s time on HIMYM was also exciting behind the scenes.
The nerds’ king
There’s an excellent case that The Big Bang Theory is the most successful sitcom to air in the last twenty years. Even after 12 seasons, the show was still a massive hit with viewers. If that wasn’t impressive enough, TBBT won 7 Emmys and was nominated for 46 more during its fantastic run on TV.
Even though all Big Bang Theory stars became very famous because of the show, Jim Parsons was the most well-known. Sheldon Cooper was the most outrageous and unique character on the show. And Parsons played him so well that it often seems like he was born to play the part. With this in mind, many people are still surprised. That Parsons had so much to do with how The Big Bang Theory ended.
The Big Show
In a video posted on the YouTube channel for The Late Show with James Corden, Jim Parsons talked about some of the theories that fans have about The Big Bang Theory. Some fans said, “Sheldon is Spock in disguise,” and “Bernadette is a cyborg that Howard made.”
“What’s funny about this is that when I tried out for the role of Barney. I thought I was terrible for it and almost ran screaming out of the room afterward. I did that, and I don’t know why, but they made me come back as if they were interested. Um, I’m not interested enough because Neil Patrick Harris was the right choice for that part.”
Then Parson started talking about the theory: “I find it interesting that I have a loose connection to that part. And you have this theory that isn’t true.” But you don’t have this idea at all. I mean, I could be giving off that vibe. Maybe this character I’ve been playing is a womanizer and a horndog at heart. I mean, yeah. I reflect that this one is about as close to the truth as possible. So, I’m glad you told me.”
