For the most part, HIMYF has changed its format for 2022 and dealt with many issues that have come up since How I Met Your Mother first aired almost ten years ago. In “Good Mom,” the fifth episode of HIMYF, an old How I Met Your Mother joke that should have stayed in the original show is brought back. But in some episodes of How I Met Your Father, jokes that aren’t as offensive as others are used repeatedly. These jokes could have been left out.
How I Met Your Father introduces Chris Lowell’s character Jesse by saying he doesn’t believe in love. After a video of the stage where his idea was turned down went viral, how I Met, Your Father goes into more detail about that viral fail video and shows that he fell off the stage. Someone said he wet himself, but it was just his Cosmopolitan that he spilled on his crotch. When Jesse returns to the scene and goes on stage later in the episode. Someone laughs at him because he drinks the same thing as his mother. And as a joke, someone sends him a Cosmopolitan.
When Jesse drinks a Cosmopolitan in How I Met Your Father, he gets made fun of in public. He says he likes them because they are both sweet and sour. This character being shamed for choosing a drink that makes them happy reminds me of a running joke about Marshall from HIMYM (Jason Segal). Marshall wants to be able to drink those fancy drinks with fruit and umbrellas.
But he doesn’t want to seem girly, so when he orders one, Lily (Alyson Hannigan) thinks it’s for her.
This directly references Marshall’s situation in How I Met Your Mother. How I Met, Your Father will have a lot to say about how people use their looks. In Episode 4 of HIMYF, Sid (Suraj Sharma) gets made fun of for wearing an engagement ring that makes him happy. But even though more men will be wearing engagement rings in 2022. He needs to defend his gender identity by calling it a “man-engagement” ring. This is a bad joke, but some women think it’s a promise ring. The only good thing about these How I Met Your Father scenes is that. Even though the show and the characters make fun of the wants. The characters defend doing what makes them happy and keep going no matter what.
How I Met, Your Mother may have been even worse because it mixed tastes and genders. Even so far as to turn stereotypes on their heads. The fact that Marshall likes fruity drinks makes him seem like a girl. Even if we don’t think about the trauma Robin (Cobie Smulders) went through because of her gender at the hands of her father. This change is not as progressive as it seems because it is just two sides of the same coin. In 2022, it’s sad to see that How I Met Your Father still uses these offensive and sexist gender stereotypes. Even though the rest of the show is pretty progressive, these jokes could hurt the show’s future.
