Penny was a bubbly, friendly contrast to her nerdy neighbours. She was also an easy way for those of us who aren’t physicists to get into the show. Kaley Cuoco told TV Insider in 2019 that her character was “the eyes and ears for the actual audience.” The actress added, “It helped people understand, but it helped people laugh when she’d give a funny look (to the guys.)” Cuoco joined the hugely popular series Big Bang Theory when it started in 2007 and played Penny’s for 279 episodes, winning a Satellite Award, a Critics’ Choice Television Award, and two People’s Choice Awards in a row (via IMDb).

Penny wants to be an actress and lives across the hall from physicists Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki) and Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) in their Pasadena apartment.

First introduced as the guys’ outgoing neighbour, the character quickly became a show’s mainstay, developing feelings for Sheldon, love for future husband Leonard, and unlikely friendships with Amy (Mayim Bialik) and Bernadette (Melissa Rauch). But things that happened off-screen would ultimately shape Penny’s storyline on-screen.

An accident ended Penny’s waitressing career.

While pursuing an acting career, Penny works as a waitress at The Cheesecake Factory. Her acting credits include a haemorrhoids ad and “Serial Apeist. But she lands a job at The Cheesecake Factory — but not for what you might think.

Cuoco explains why her character became a bartender in Season 4 of “The Ellen Degeneres Show.” Cuoco admits it was a real-life horse riding accident, not Penny’s bartending skills. The horse accidentally trampled the actress after she was bucked off. Kaley Cuoco describes the scene in gory detail: “I heard [the crackling] and thought he landed on leaves, but that was my bones. I was not feeling anything, and then I looked. My foot was facing me. That’s not normal.”

In “The Apology Insufficiency,” Kaley Cuoco returns with a leg cast (via Screen Rant). The show’s writers hid the actress’ injury behind the bar. Penny’s new job as a bartender allowed her to establish some fresh comedic bits, like conning Sheldon into partying which a Long Island Iced Tea and adopting the bartender-as-therapist persona. Since 2010, Cuoco has avoided horse-related injuries, which is good. In her new, favourably kinetic series, “The Flight Attendant,” it would be harder to hide a serious injury, especially if she’s serving drinks.
